Sunderland School Celebrates World Mental Health Day with an Afternoon Dedicated to Wellbeing

Students and staff at Consilium Evolve, part of Consilium Academies, came together to celebrate World Mental Health Day with an afternoon of activities focused on wellbeing, connection and positive mental health.

Consilium Evolve is a specialist Alternative Provision Academy, part of Consilium Academies, supporting secondary-age students who experience emotionally based school avoidance. More than just an educational setting, Evolve provides a safe, calm and nurturing environment where every student is encouraged to overcome barriers, rebuild confidence and take their place in the world.

The event brought the school community together through a carousel of therapeutic activities, giving students the opportunity to try new experiences, express themselves creatively and explore different ways to support their emotional wellbeing.

A wellbeing café provided a welcoming space for mindful crafts, music-making, creativity and conversation. Students and staff were also invited to dress as their ‘best self’, celebrating individuality, personal interests and aspirations while promoting positive self-esteem and self-expression. The school was filled with a fantastic variety of outfits, creating a colourful and uplifting atmosphere.

Animals played a special part in the afternoon, with students learning about the benefits of animal-assisted therapy and the positive impact animals can have on emotional wellbeing. They met a therapy dog, spent time with rabbits and guinea pigs, learned how to safely care for and bathe tortoises, and enjoyed a particularly special visit from miniature therapy ponies.

These experiences provided valuable opportunities for students to develop confidence, empathy and emotional awareness, while discovering how connecting with and caring for animals can support positive mental health.

Karyn Taylor, Principal at Evolve, said: “We know that young people thrive when they feel that they belong. This event was about much more than wellbeing activities; it was about creating opportunities for connection, confidence and shared experiences. Seeing our students engage so positively with each other, our staff and the therapy animals was a powerful reminder of the importance of building a school community where every student feels safe, valued and understood.”

The afternoon was filled with smiles, meaningful interactions and moments of genuine connection. Evolve extended its thanks to the therapy animal providers and staff team whose support helped make the event such a success.

At Evolve, supporting students goes beyond academic achievement. The school is committed to creating an environment where every young person has the opportunity to develop confidence, build positive relationships and feel a strong sense of belonging.

Events such as this highlight the importance of nurturing positive mental health through connection, compassion and meaningful experiences, ensuring every student feels supported, valued and understood.
